How this file is built, and what it is guarding against

In one lineThe sourcing rules, and why they exist.

Two things repeatedly destroy research in this subject area: sloppy sourcing, and litigation used as a deterrent. The rules below exist because both have already happened to people in this document.

Sourcing rules
  • Cite the primary artifact — the .eml, the stamped filing, the status ID. Transcriptions are reading copies and are labelled as such.
  • Get absolute dates and status IDs before citing anything captured through an archive viewer that displays relative timestamps.
  • Never cite a harassment forum as a source, even when the embedded artifact inside it is real. Go to the artifact.
  • A denial and an admission in the same message are two separate propositions. Never quote the denial snippet in isolation.
  • Unverified stays unverified until an artifact closes it. Nothing gets promoted by repetition.
The deterrent pattern

Neal Rauhauser's 2016 "manipulating conspiracy theorists" doctrine describes calibrated encouragement and provocation, tuned to a success-rate band that produces either despair or overreach in the target. His documented lawfare doctrine treats expensive, long-distance, discovery-heavy litigation as a deterrence tool — make an example of one critic to quiet the rest.

A matching intake funnel is documentable in four independent sources: Rauhauser's doctrine, Kirtaner's Matrix room created and labelled by him as a sinkhole for "real q crazies once plans enact," a Reddit recruitment drive pulling in roughly five hundred unvetted volunteers, and those volunteers being exposed to Rauhauser without disclosure.

On the attorney at the center of the pipeline
A thread of tweets by attorney Ty Clevenger dated May 3 discussing Steve Biss and litigation involving Trevor Fitzgibbon
Ty Clevenger, May 3, 2021.

Steven Biss's professional standing is not a matter of this file's opinion. A fellow attorney who twice served as his local counsel writes publicly that Biss is one of the worst attorneys he knows and should indeed be disbarred, adding that Biss shafted both clients and him.

The same thread documents Biss winning defamation actions on behalf of Trevor Fitzgibbon — who appears in the notes' own "involved" column in chapter 01. The rest of the thread concerns serious personal allegations between third parties and is not reproduced or adopted here; it is outside this file's scope and nothing in it is treated as established.

What is in scope: the lawfare vehicle in chapter 12 runs through a sanctioned attorney, whose wife wrote in 2019 that Schoenberger works for her. The deterrent effect of a lawsuit does not depend on the lawyer being good at it. It depends on the defendant having to show up.

Litigation status — stated precisely

Schoenberger v. Dilley et al. — originally Michigan Court of Claims No. 25-000045-MM; Wayne County No. 25-012153-CZ transferred and renumbered 25-000186-MZ; consolidated December 2025 under master file No. 26-000013-MZ. Thomas Schoenberger is the plaintiff.

The author of this dossier is not a named defendant in any of it — described in the complaint, not sued, and no John Doe defendant appears in the caption. That correction is recorded here because it was previously stated wrongly, including in earlier working notes, and a wrong claim about legal status is exactly the kind of error this file exists to avoid.

One structural effect is worth naming: a docket legitimizes the plaintiff by implication. The existence of a court record suggests there is something substantive to litigate about Cicada 3301 authorship, and a dismissal does not retract that impression. The Cicada installment of the published series is held until this resolves — which is a decision about sequencing, not about what the evidence shows.

Attribution ledger

Research from this desk has been republished without credit repeatedly enough that the pattern is itself part of the record: an annotated video clip rebroadcast as someone else's authentication device; five Medium articles that move from naming this author twice in acknowledgments, to calling him "arguably the hero of our story," to zero body-text mentions in a flagship rewrite five years later; a 222-to-31 link-sharing ratio showing near-total one-directional research flow in one DM archive.

Named in this document as attribution actors because it is documented, not because it is personal: Jim Stewartson, Daniel Morrison, Jack Bryan, and Thomas Schoenberger.
